Ocon vents frustration after yellow flags deny him first Q3 of 2026 in Baku

Esteban Ocon was robbed of what would have been his first Q3 appearance of the 2026 Formula 1 season in Baku on Saturday, after yellow flags caused by Arvid Lindblad’s off-track excursion forced the Haas driver to lift through Turn 15 during his final Q2 run. He ended qualifying 14th, 0.241 seconds behind team-mate Oliver Bearman and 0.333 seconds short of advancing.

“Unbelievable,” Ocon said. “We were on for a Q3 lap, the car was working well. You know, we don’t have many chances like this when the car is working well — it hasn’t been working throughout the whole season. We improved things, but we had a Q3 car today.”

The Frenchman estimated the yellow flag cost him three to four tenths of a second. “I did the same lap time, again arriving to Turn 15. I don’t know who went off, but I had to back off on the exit to make sure that I was not going to get any penalty,” he explained. “Different race weekend, same shit. It’s always something going on on my side — if it’s either the car, if it’s something else, yellow flag, safety cars, whatever. But I don’t deserve all the shit that I have on my back at the moment.”

Ocon’s frustration is rooted in a season-long pattern of reliability problems with the VF-26. He claims the car has suffered inconsistent part performance across 10 of the 15 rounds so far — a situation Haas have publicly acknowledged. This weekend in Baku had been a rare exception, with the car behaving as expected, making the qualifying outcome all the more bitter.

The outburst comes against a backdrop of mounting pressure on Ocon’s future at the team. Haas are currently evaluating multiple drivers for their 2027 line-up, and with Bearman taking 11th — the team’s best qualifying result since the Chinese Grand Prix — the internal comparison is not flattering for the Frenchman.

Ocon was blunt about his race prospects from 14th on the grid. “We need to fight in the top 10 tomorrow now, because we are 14th, we are not in the top 10,” he said. “At the end of the day, yes, we were competitive, but we can’t get there. Never. It’s never happening.”

The Azerbaijan Grand Prix takes place on the Baku City Circuit on Sunday.
