Sainz drops from ninth to 14th on Azerbaijan grid after yellow flag breach in Q3

Carlos Sainz will start Saturday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix from 14th on the grid after stewards handed the Williams driver a five-place penalty for speeding under yellow flags during Q3 qualifying in Baku.

The incident occurred late in Q3 when Lando Norris ran off into the escape road at Turn 3, triggering local yellow flags. Sainz’s race engineer warned him of the yellow ahead and asked for a “little lift” into the 90-degree left-hander, but the FIA’s stewards determined that the Spaniard only meaningfully reduced his speed in one of the two affected marshal sectors.

Sainz argued that he had taken a “global lift” across the entire yellow zone, scrubbing off sufficient speed as a whole rather than sector by sector. He also contended that Norris had already returned to the track by the time he arrived, and that he expected the yellow flags to be withdrawn.

The stewards rejected that reasoning outright. “Where consecutive marshalling sectors are subject to Yellow Flag conditions, a driver must demonstrate a significant reaction to reduce speed in each individual Yellow marshalling sector,” they wrote in their ruling. “A reduction in a subsequent sector cannot retrospectively satisfy the requirement applicable to the preceding Yellow sector.”

Telemetry proved decisive. Sainz not only failed to slow in Marshalling Sector 4 — he actually recorded his fastest mini-sector of the entire session there, leaving the stewards with little room for leniency.

“The obligation is also not dependent on the driver’s own assessment of whether the original hazard remains present within a particular part of the Yellow sector,” the stewards added. “The telemetry clearly showed that SAI’s reaction to the Yellow occurred only in Marshalling Sector 5. There was no meaningful reduction in speed in Marshalling Sector 4 which could realistically be attributed to a response to the Yellow.”

The five-place drop demotes Sainz from ninth to 14th and largely erases the gains Williams had made in reaching Q3 with a freshly lightened chassis. Separately, Sergio Perez was also penalised during the session, receiving an impeding penalty.
