Northampton sign three triallists as champions build squad depth for title defence
Premiership champions Northampton Saints have handed full-time contracts to lock James Bennett, winger Thomas Rowe, and hooker Ben Alexander ahead of the 2026/27 season, with all three having combined university studies with training at Franklin's Gardens during the title-winning campaign.
Northampton Saints have converted three triallists into full-time professionals ahead of the 2026/27 Gallagher Premiership season, adding lock James Bennett, winger Thomas Rowe, and hooker Ben Alexander to their squad after the trio contributed to the club’s second title in three years.
Bennett and Rowe spent much of the 2025/26 campaign balancing studies at Loughborough University with regular training sessions at Franklin’s Gardens, while Alexander — a former Old Albanian player — joined the Saints environment during the second block of Premiership Rugby Cup fixtures to cover a shortage at hooker during the Six Nations window. All three made their first-team debuts in the PREM Cup last season.
“With players out on loan across National One, National Two, and the CHAMP, we watch a lot of rugby outside of the Gallagher Prem,” said Saints’ Director of Rugby Phil Dowson. “Our coaching group — particularly Jim Henry, who has been working with Bedford Blues alongside Saints this season — has a strong understanding of the talent that’s out there.”
Dowson was quick to praise the professionalism shown by all three despite their part-time status. “They’ve trained with us, worked in the gym, sat in meetings and already started to understand how we operate as a club. While these are new contracts for next season, they’ll arrive for pre-season with a solid grasp of what’s expected and how we want to play.”
Bennett, described by Dowson as a “big lad” standing 6‘8” and weighing 130kg, made four appearances last season — the most of the three — and came through the Saints Academy before impressing during PREM Cup preparation. “He wants to carry, he’s keen to learn, and he’s really taken his opportunity whenever he’s been involved,” Dowson added.
Rowe’s sole appearance came against Harlequins in November, while Alexander — a converted back-row — also made his debut against Harlequins, in February. Dowson explained that Alexander came to the club’s attention through former teammate Dan George at Old Albanians, describing him as “a remarkable athlete.”
The signings reflect a deliberate recruitment philosophy at Franklin’s Gardens, with Northampton maintaining close ties to university rugby and the lower leagues as a pipeline for emerging talent.
