Lutui signs multi-year deal with Loughborough after debut Six Nations call-up
Haineala Lutui has committed her future to Loughborough Lightning on a multi-year contract after a breakthrough 2025/26 season that took her from university rugby to a senior England debut in just 444 days.
Haineala Lutui has signed a new multi-year contract with Loughborough Lightning, securing the 19-year-old’s future at the club after a debut season that culminated in a senior England cap at the Women’s Six Nations.
Lutui made her Lightning debut last August in the PWR: The Cup before earning her league debut against Harlequins in October’s season opener. She went on to carry the ball more than any other player in the PWR — 247 times in total — and finished second in the gain-line carries chart behind club teammate Alev Kelter.
That form persuaded England Red Roses head coach John Mitchell to call Lutui into his Guinness Women’s Six Nations squad. She made her senior international debut against Ireland in the Championship opener at Allianz Stadium, just 444 days after her first BUCS Super Rugby appearance for Loughborough University.
The teenager was named Loughborough’s Young Player of the Season and the PWR Breakthrough Player of the Season, and becomes the fourth England international to commit her long-term future to the club, joining Sadia Kabeya, Helena Rowland and Daisy Hibbert-Jones.
“The environment at Loughborough has constantly pushed me to improve and challenge myself, while also giving me the confidence to express myself as a player,” Lutui said. “I get the opportunity to play alongside amazing players such as Sadia Kabeya, Daisy Hibbert-Jones and Lilli Ives Campion, which has helped me improve my own game. I’m really grateful to be part of such a special club.”
Head coach Nathan Smith was equally effusive about the back-row and lock’s rapid rise. “She has gone from a university player to breaking into a World Cup-winning Red Roses side in little over a year,” he said. “What’s even more exciting is that she is extremely coachable, and we’re only scratching the surface of what she can go on to achieve.”
Smith added that Lutui’s trajectory, alongside that of Lilli Ives Campion, serves as a marker for what the Loughborough pathway can offer young players aspiring to reach the international stage.
