South Africa U20 overturn 14-point deficit to reach Junior World Championship semi-finals as top seeds
South Africa U20 stormed back from 14-0 down to beat Wales U20 52-33 in Tbilisi, securing top seeding in the Junior World Championship semi-finals. New Zealand, England, and France also advanced, setting up a last-four lineup on July 13.
South Africa U20 produced a remarkable comeback in Tbilisi on Tuesday, overturning a 14-0 first-half deficit to defeat Wales U20 52-33 and advance to the World Rugby Junior World Championship semi-finals as the top seeds. The result confirmed the Junior Boks’ place at the summit of Pool A and set up a blockbuster final-four lineup.
The semi-finals were determined by three winner-takes-all clashes in round three, with England U20 versus Argentina U20 in Pool C and France U20 versus Australia U20 in Pool D also deciding the remaining spots. New Zealand U20 had already set the tone earlier in the day at the AIA Arena in Kutaisi, registering a commanding 45-15 win over Italy U20 — seven different players crossing the line — to become the first side to book their place in the last four.
England’s passage was the most dramatic. Andy Titterrell’s side held a 35-12 lead in the second half before being reduced to 13 men, and were forced to defend desperately in the final play of the game to survive a 40-38 thriller against Argentina at the Avchala Stadium.
France completed the semi-final picture with a 34-29 victory over Australia at the AIA Arena, flanker Lucas Andjisseramatchi scoring twice to fire Les Bleuets through as Pool D winners.
With all four pool winners collecting bonus-point victories across their three matches, seedings were decided on points difference. South Africa topped the standings on +125, ahead of France (+60), New Zealand (+57), and England (+37). As a result, South Africa will face England, and New Zealand will meet France in the Championship semi-finals on Monday, July 13, in Tbilisi.
The defeated sides — Wales, Argentina, and Australia — drop into the fifth-place semi-finals on Sunday, July 12, where they will be joined by Scotland U20, who finished second in Pool B after defeating Japan U20 43-32. Australia, as the highest-ranked of the three pool runners-up, will face Wales, while Argentina take on Scotland.
