Nominated for Yashin Trophy, Safonov Under Pressure Despite Champions League Season

Matvey Safonov has been selected among ten nominees for the best goalkeeper award, which will be presented at the Ballon d’Or ceremony. The distinction rewards his performances during PSG’s successful Champions League campaign last season.

The Russian goalkeeper is in contention to succeed his teammate Gianluigi Donnarumma, the first winner of the Yashin Trophy following the Parisian club’s European triumph. Among his main competitors are Spain’s Unai Simon, a cornerstone of the world champion national team, and David Raya, who enjoyed a remarkable season with Arsenal.

This nomination comes, however, in a delicate context for Safonov. Promoted to starter at PSG in January, the 25-year-old goalkeeper is having a difficult start to the Ligue 1 season: six goals conceded from nine shots on target faced in three matches, while Paris has taken only two points. His insufficient performances have reignited debate around a possible return of Lucas Chevalier to the goal, he who had been sidelined in favor of the Russian a few months ago.
