Ngumoha vows to bring 'fearless' edge to England as Tuchel embraces attacking chaos

Rio Ngumoha has declared himself ready to fulfil Thomas Tuchel’s vision of a more unpredictable England side, after the Liverpool winger was named in the squad for Nations League matches against Spain, Croatia, and home and away fixtures against Czechia.

Ngumoha made his senior England debut at 17 in June, coming off the bench to impress during a victory over New Zealand in Florida as part of the country’s pre-World Cup training camp. He turned 18 last month.

Tuchel, reflecting on England’s semi-final defeat to Argentina, pledged to “compromise in my wish to urge for more control, instead embrace a little bit more chaos” — a tactical shift that appears tailor-made for a player who describes himself simply as “fearless”.

“He’s really helpful, and I think him picking me shows his belief in me and how exciting and explosive he thinks I am,” Ngumoha told talkSPORT. “All I can do now is just show him again why I should be here for the many more camps and why he thinks I should be a big part of the team.”

The winger was candid about his style of play, emphasising a directness that fits Tuchel’s new philosophy. “I like to take on players, whether it’s one-v-ones, sometimes two-v-ones as well. But also, I want to help the team out with goals and assists because at the end of the day, it’s not just about me — it’s about winning trophies and winning games.”

Ngumoha’s rise has been rapid even by the standards of modern football. A match-winning goal on his Premier League debut for Liverpool preceded his England call-up, yet he insists the speed of his progression is something he always believed possible.

“I would have believed it because I’m a big believer in you have to say what you want to achieve, like manifest it really,” he said on BBC Radio 5 Live. “Even though it might sound crazy to another person, it can happen in life because life can just be like that, so fast.”

He credited his older brother — 11 years his senior — with instilling that conviction. “He just instilled the mentality in my mind, saying, ‘You’ve got to say things out loud to achieve them’. Really, I think that’s stuck with me forever.”

With Tuchel actively seeking players who can inject unpredictability into England’s attack, Ngumoha’s combination of self-belief and demonstrated quality at club level suggests his place in the international setup may be only the beginning.
