Newcastle rue failed £15m Hojbjerg move as Jaissle's midfield crisis deepens after Leeds rout

Newcastle United’s midfield crisis was laid bare in a 4-1 defeat at Elland Road on Monday night, with new manager Matthias Jaissle left scrambling after Nico Gonzalez was substituted with a suspected concussion just 18 minutes into the game against Leeds United.

The result has sharpened the pain of a summer transfer that nearly happened. Newcastle came close to signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Marseille for £15 million, with both clubs reportedly confident the deal would go through — only for the Danish midfielder to pull the plug himself, even after being stripped of the Marseille captaincy in anticipation of his departure.

The timing could hardly be worse. Newcastle sold both Sandro Tonali and captain Bruno Guimaraes this summer, losing two of the most experienced and influential midfielders in the Premier League at a stroke. Gonzalez, signed from Manchester City, was brought in as part of the rebuild, but his early exit at Leeds left Jaissle with a midfield that was one injury away from fielding a central pairing with an average age of 19.

Sean Steur, signed from Ajax and brought on as a concussion substitute for Gonzalez, and Lewis Miley are among the young options available, with Aladji Bamba — also 20 — another name in the pool. Jaissle has indicated in press conference that Bamba is not yet ready for regular first-team demands. Joe Willock remains in the squad but has been deployed in a more advanced role under the German.

Hojbjerg, now 31, would have offered precisely what Newcastle currently lack: Premier League experience, physical presence, and leadership. The Dane made 145 top-flight appearances across four seasons at Southampton and four at Tottenham Hotspur, and his profile as a streetwise, combative midfielder would have made him an ideal cover option — the kind of experienced substitute Jaissle desperately needed at Elland Road.

Instead, Hojbjerg remains at Marseille, and Gonzalez will miss Newcastle’s next fixture against Hull City under FA concussion protocols. With Steur and Bamba viewed as long-term investments rather than immediate solutions, Jaissle faces a pressing problem in the middle of the pitch — one that was foreseeable, and one that a £15 million signing came agonisingly close to solving.
