Newcastle boss rules out Lewis Hall move as United pursue left-back reinforcements

Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle has flatly rejected the prospect of Lewis Hall joining Manchester United this summer, declaring “No chance! No chance!” when confronted with the transfer speculation. The 21-year-old had been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford as Michael Carrick’s side seek left-back cover for Luke Shaw.

The exchange came during Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday, when former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel — working as a pundit — told Jaissle directly: “We’re after your left-back.” The German coach’s response left little room for interpretation. Hall featured in that match and impressed for much of the game before conceding a late penalty that denied Newcastle victory.

The Magpies have already seen significant departures this summer, with Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes all completing high-profile exits. Jaissle’s firm stance on Hall suggests the club are determined to hold on to their remaining key players.

With the Hall route apparently closed, United have turned attention to Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde as an alternative option at left-back. The 22-year-old was omitted from Barcelona’s matchday squad for their 5-0 win over Elche on Sunday, with Spanish outlet Sport reporting that manager Hansi Flick was due to hold a face-to-face meeting with the player on Monday to discuss his future.

According to that report, the talks could “open the door” for Balde to leave the Catalan club if the situation remains unresolved. Flick is said to be willing to keep the defender but wants him to demonstrate a desire to compete for his place. Barcelona have Joao Cancelo, Xavi Espart and Gerard Martin as alternative left-back options should Balde depart.

United’s need for defensive reinforcement has been underlined by a difficult start to the season. Carrick’s side suffered a 2-0 opening-day defeat to Hull City, with new midfield arrivals Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos both featuring. The club have since agreed a deal with Brighton for Carlos Baleba, adding further competition in the centre of the park.
