Glasner threatens to quit Nottingham Forest unless club makes major changes after Brentford defeat
Oliver Glasner warned Nottingham Forest he could walk away after a 2-0 loss at Brentford left the club second from bottom in the Premier League, saying a 'same s*** situation' as last season demands immediate change or a sixth manager will follow.
Oliver Glasner threatened to resign as Nottingham Forest head coach on Saturday after a 2-0 defeat at Brentford’s Gtech Stadium dropped the club to second from bottom in the Premier League, warning that a sixth manager in under a year could be on the way unless the situation changes.
A freak own goal from Nikola Milenkovic and Igor Thiago’s late strike condemned Forest to a fourth loss in their last five league games. Glasner, appointed as the club’s fifth head coach in less than a year at the start of the season, did not hide his frustration in the aftermath.
“If you lose four of the last five games, it’s not good enough,” the Austrian said. “And that’s why for me, it’s now time that we change things, that I change things, and that’s what I will do.”
Glasner suggested he had been too accommodating since taking charge and signalled that era was over. “I feel maybe I made too many compromises in some stuff. I will tell what we want to do, what we have to do. And if the players buy in, I think we can have a turnaround. And if not, the sixth manager will come in.”
He was equally blunt about his own position, making clear he would not be held hostage by the circumstances. “Nobody needs to have pity with Oliver Glasner. If I want, I could start in two weeks somewhere else. I won’t do it. But the players, the staff, they remain in the same situation — the same, sorry for the word, s*** situation that the club had last year.”
For Brentford, the win ended a four-match winless run and lifted them to sixth. Interim boss Keith Andrews described it as the club’s best victory of the season. “This opposition and how they play, how they set up to try to condense the pitch, they test you in different ways,” Andrews said. “There was a lot of smart play and leadership from our players, which I liked. On so many levels I think it’s a brilliant win.”
The result was also the 100th Premier League match played at the Gtech Stadium, a milestone Brentford marked with one of their more significant results of the campaign. For Forest, the pressure on Glasner and the squad intensifies with the club now firmly embroiled in a relegation battle.
