New signing Allan joins training as City prepare for Porto Champions League opener
Manchester City held a Monday session ahead of Tuesday's Champions League trip to Porto, with Brazilian winger Allan training for the first time and Enzo Fernandez pushing for a second successive start. Jeremy Doku and Nico O'Reilly were both absent through injury.
Manchester City trained at their Etihad Campus on Monday ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League opener away to Porto, with new signing Allan making his first appearance in a group session and two senior players missing through injury.
Brazilian winger Allan, 22, had sat out Saturday’s Premier League win over Coventry City as manager Enzo Maresca judged him to need more time to settle in following his arrival from Palmeiras. The winger slotted into the session without issue and will hope to earn a place in the squad for the trip to Portugal.
Enzo Fernandez, who made his City debut against Coventry after stepping in for the injured Nico O’Reilly, was among the first players on the training pitch alongside club captain Ruben Dias. The pair worked through passing drills with Phil Foden and Rico Lewis before the wider group joined. Fernandez could retain his starting berth in Porto after an encouraging first outing.
O’Reilly remains unavailable after picking up a back injury in the pre-match warm-up at the weekend, while Jeremy Doku is still sidelined with the problem that has kept him out since the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal. City head into the game having won all three of their opening Premier League fixtures under Maresca.
One notable presence in the session was teenage goalkeeper Jack Wint. The 19-year-old is currently on loan at National League side Kidderminster Harriers — where he has made five appearances this season — but continues to train with the first-team squad on a part-time basis. Wint, who was part of City’s pre-season tour in Asia, provided support to the senior goalkeeping group of Gianluigi Donnarumma, Geronimo Rulli, and Marcus Bettinelli.
Regular first-team fringe players Floyd Samba and Kaden Braithwaite were not involved in Monday’s session, though Ryan McAidoo, who has established himself as a fixture in Maresca’s squad this season, did take part.
On a lighter note, staff set up a pitchside speaker to accompany the warm-up phase — a new addition to City’s training routine this season — with the playlist reportedly opening with a party-themed message before shifting into Cafe Del Mar-style ambient music. The music was switched off once the session moved into its more structured drills.
