Neville warns Bruno Fernandes faces unwanted positional shift as Man Utd midfield grows

Gary Neville has warned that Manchester United’s growing midfield options will likely force Bruno Fernandes into a wider role he is ill-suited to, as the club search for greater defensive solidity after a difficult start to the Premier League season.

United have won just once in their opening three league games, conceding twice in each match. Despite that inconsistency, Fernandes has been one of the few bright spots, scoring three times already and continuing to operate as the team’s creative hub under manager Michael Carrick.

The problem, as Neville sees it, is one of arithmetic. Carrick brought in three midfielders during the summer — Carlos Baleba from Brighton, Youri Tielemans, and Andrey Santos — alongside the continued development of academy product Kobbie Mainoo. Fitting all of them into a starting XI alongside Fernandes is proving difficult within the current two-man midfield structure.

“The only thing I can see happening eventually is that we’ll have to drop one of that front four and play three in midfield,” Neville said. “Maybe Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba and Kobbie Mainoo, adding an extra midfield player. That means sometimes Bruno has to go to the side, which isn’t ideal because I think he’s better in that number ten spot.”

Neville’s concern goes beyond tactics. He framed the potential switch as a defensive necessity rather than an attacking preference, pointing to United’s habit of conceding as the driving force behind any system change. “How do we, without changing shape, become more solid so we don’t concede every single game? Because if we carry on conceding like this, we won’t be in the Champions League. We have to stop conceding goals.”

Baleba’s arrival, in particular, is seen as offering more defensive cover in the middle of the park — a quality that would be amplified in a three-man unit. United have not made a significant investment in their back four across the last two transfer windows, and questions remain over several of their defensive individuals.

Looking ahead to the Manchester derby, Neville suggested a back four of Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, and Lisandro Martínez would represent United’s strongest available selection — though the bigger tactical question of how to balance creativity with defensive structure remains unresolved.
