Netflix trailer reveals Schumacher '94 documentary premiering on 2 October

Netflix has released the trailer for Schumacher ‘94 - The Birth of a Legend, a feature-length documentary revisiting Michael Schumacher’s maiden Formula 1 championship, with a global premiere set for 2 October.

Produced by LEONINE Documentaries and directed by Christin Freitag, the German-language film centres on the 1994 season — widely regarded as one of the most turbulent in the sport’s history. The trailer offers behind-the-scenes footage from that campaign and previews interviews with several figures who were close to the seven-time champion.

Schumacher’s wife, Corinna, features prominently throughout the documentary. She is joined by former Benetton team principal Flavio Briatore, former F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone, Schumacher’s long-time manager Willi Weber, former driver David Coulthard, and veteran German broadcasters Kai Ebel and Heiko Waßer.

The film’s official synopsis frames 1994 as a defining moment: “25-year-old Michael Schumacher wins the first grand prix of the racing season in Brazil, setting the stage for an unprecedented career.” It also acknowledges the season’s darker chapters, including Ayrton Senna’s fatal accident at Imola and the controversies surrounding Schumacher’s driving and Benetton’s technical conduct.

Corinna Schumacher’s contribution extends beyond the racing narrative. According to the synopsis, she offers insight into “the beginnings of an extraordinary love story” with her husband, describing him as “an uncompromising fighter on the race track and a sensitive, empathic man off the course.”

The documentary arrives more than three decades after that championship, at a time when public interest in Schumacher’s life remains high following the 2021 Netflix film Schumacher, which drew a wide global audience. Schumacher ‘94 takes a narrower, season-specific focus, leaning on primary sources and archival material to reconstruct a year that shaped the modern era of Formula 1.
