Netflix will release Schumacher ‘94 - The Birth of a Legend on 2 October 2026, the streaming platform has confirmed, bringing a feature-length documentary to global audiences that chronicles Michael Schumacher’s first Formula 1 world championship campaign. The announcement follows an initial preview of the project at a Netflix Germany presentation earlier this year.

The German-language non-fiction film traces the arc of a 25-year-old Schumacher transforming from underdog to world champion across the 1994 season — widely regarded as one of the most dramatic in the sport’s history. Beyond the title fight, the documentary is expected to address the fatal 1994 San Marino Grand Prix weekend at Imola, during which Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger both lost their lives, as well as the controversy surrounding accusations of manipulation and unsporting driving that dogged that season.

Directed by Christin Freitag and produced by LEONINE Documentaries, the film will feature Schumacher’s wife Corinna alongside other figures close to the seven-time champion. Netflix’s synopsis describes Corinna as offering insight into “the beginnings of an extraordinary love story — one that is still going strong today,” a notable reference given that Schumacher has remained largely out of public view since suffering a severe traumatic brain injury in a skiing accident in December 2013.

“1994 marks a turning point in Formula 1 history: 25-year-old Michael Schumacher wins the first grand prix of the racing season in Brazil, setting the stage for an unprecedented career,” the official synopsis reads.

The project follows Netflix’s 2021 documentary Schumacher, which drew significant global viewership, and adds to the platform’s growing motorsport catalogue that includes the long-running Drive to Survive docuseries. Schumacher ‘94 represents a more focused, single-season approach — zooming in on the year that launched one of the sport’s most celebrated and scrutinised careers.
