Neil Redfearn saved Lucy Ward's mother's life while pundit worked World Cup 2026
ITV co-commentator Lucy Ward has paid tribute to her partner Neil Redfearn after the former Premier League midfielder stepped in to save her mother's life back home in the UK while Ward was covering World Cup 2026 matches across North America.
ITV co-commentator and pundit Lucy Ward has publicly praised her partner Neil Redfearn after the former professional footballer saved her mother’s life while she was on duty at the 2026 World Cup in North America.
Ward, who has been working as a co-commentator and analyst across matches in Mexico, Canada and the United States, shared the news via her Instagram Stories on Tuesday night. “This one saved my Mum’s life on Friday whilst I was away at the World Cup,” she wrote alongside a photo of Redfearn. “What a man, forever grateful for you.”
The precise nature of Redfearn’s intervention has not been disclosed, but Ward confirmed in a follow-up post that her mother had been taken to hospital before making a full recovery. “Mum is fine and back home from the hospital. All good,” she added. “Sometimes life comes at you fast. What a man.”
Redfearn, 57, spent the majority of his playing career at Barnsley and made more than 800 appearances across a professional career that stretched from 1982 to 2006. He represented a string of clubs including Bolton, Crystal Palace, Charlton, Bradford and Oldham before retiring at non-league Scarborough. In management, he served as caretaker and head coach at Leeds United on four separate occasions between 2012 and 2015, as well as a brief spell at Rotherham United.
Ward herself was back at work shortly after posting the tribute, joining lead commentator Joe Speight for Mexico’s round-of-32 tie against Ecuador at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.
A former player with Leeds and Doncaster, Ward has become one of the most prominent female voices in the men’s game. She was recognised by The Guardian as one of the top broadcasters of the 2024-25 season and has worked across the Premier League, Champions League and multiple other competitions throughout her broadcasting career.
