Morgan Rogers defends Cole Palmer's England absence as Tuchel voices frustration

Morgan Rogers has publicly defended Cole Palmer’s controversial withdrawal from England’s international camp, telling reporters at Tottenham’s training complex on Friday that his Chelsea teammate and close friend must prioritise his physical condition after an injury-disrupted season.

Palmer pulled out of the three-week, four-game camp to work with a personal rehab coach in the Caribbean, with the decision attributed to load management. The absence visibly irritated England manager Thomas Tuchel, who did not hold back when addressing the media.

“He misses too many opportunities,” Tuchel said. “I don’t blame him for it. It is just a fact. He misses way too many camps with injuries. I only want to rely on what I witness and see within my team, and for that you have to be in camp.”

Rogers, speaking upstairs at the same Tottenham facility while Tuchel delivered those remarks below, offered a warmer reading of the situation. “Unfortunately he couldn’t be here, but I think he’s got to focus on his body after what he went through last year,” Rogers said. “He needs to be in a good physical state and that obviously comes first as players. You want to be in the best fighting-fit shape if you can.”

The two players share a long history, having roomed together through England’s youth teams before linking up again at Stamford Bridge. Rogers acknowledged the personal disappointment of Palmer’s absence while insisting the long-term benefit outweighs the short-term loss.

“I’m disappointed he’s not here, obviously, from a selfish point of view,” Rogers said. “But I know it’ll do him the greater good moving forward, that we can get the best version of him throughout the whole season and in an England shirt moving forward.”

Rogers added that Palmer’s decision was a considered one given the physical toll of last season. “He doesn’t want to go through that again. So he’s made a decision for himself to look after his body.”

England face Spain at Wembley on Saturday, with the squad also processing a recent defeat to Argentina. The Palmer debate has dominated the build-up, though Rogers was keen to frame it as a health decision rather than a snub — and managed to raise a smile when asked whether he missed his closest friend in football.

“Nah, I’m all right having the break from him, to be honest,” Rogers said. “Being around him 24/7 can be quite tough, so having the break’s quite nice. But of course, I love playing with Cole. I love being around him.”

The scrutiny on Palmer is complicated by the fact that Declan Rice withdrew from the same camp under similar circumstances, a detail that has added nuance to the debate around the Chelsea forward’s absence.
