Michael Oliver has been appointed referee for the World Cup 2026 quarter-final between Spain and Belgium at Los Angeles Stadium, with the winner advancing to face either France or Morocco in the semi-finals.

Oliver is one of only two English referees selected for this tournament, alongside Anthony Taylor. The 41-year-old missed his opening group-stage assignment — the Ivory Coast vs Ecuador fixture — through injury, but returned to oversee further group games involving France, Norway, the Netherlands, and Sweden, before taking charge of Canada vs Morocco in the Round of 16.

His World Cup experience stretches back to the 2022 edition in Qatar, where he handled two group matches and Brazil’s quarter-final exit to Croatia on penalties. Domestically, Oliver holds the record as the youngest Premier League match-appointed referee, having made his top-flight debut in August 2010 at just 25 years and 182 days old. He has now officiated 812 competitive fixtures, including Champions League ties and two FA Cup finals.

Oliver will be assisted by fellow Englishmen Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring, while Brazilian officials Ramon Abatti and Rafael Alves serve as fourth official and reserve assistant referee respectively.

The match itself carries significant weight beyond the referee appointment. Spain arrive having not conceded a single goal throughout the tournament, making Belgium’s task a formidable one. The Belgians, meanwhile, have shown resilience and firepower in equal measure — recovering from 2-0 down to beat Senegal 3-2 before dismantling co-hosts USA 4-1 in the last 16.

The winner will progress to a semi-final on 14 July, also at Los Angeles Stadium.
