Ederson deal uncertainty exposes Manchester United's stuttering summer window
Manchester United agreed a fee with Atalanta for midfielder Ederson last month, but contradicting reports over whether the deal has collapsed have cast doubt over a transfer window that has already seen the club miss out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes.
Manchester United’s summer transfer window is under strain after conflicting reports emerged over the status of their agreed deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta, with United sources denying the transfer had collapsed while acknowledging uncertainty remains over whether it will be completed.
A report on Friday claimed the deal had fallen through, but sources close to the club pushed back, suggesting the noise was designed to increase pressure and force the move over the line. Whatever the motivation, the episode has highlighted a window that is not going according to plan.
United moved quickly at the start of the window to agree a fee for Ederson, making the potential collapse — for whatever reason — an uncomfortable situation for the club. The signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea offers some encouragement, but United have already missed out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, and losing Ederson would add to a growing list of frustrations.
The contrast with last summer is stark. Ineos chiefs had hoped to replicate the previous window’s efficiency, which delivered Matheus Cunha for £62.5 million by mid-June and Bryan Mbeumo for an initial £65 million just over a month later. Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens — who was recently named the Premier League’s inaugural transfer of the season after an impressive debut campaign — also arrived, with United securing what were considered fair fees throughout.
Replicating that level of business this summer has proved far more difficult. Market inflation has pushed prices to levels that United’s hierarchy consider unrealistic. The club’s interest in Mateus Fernandes, for instance, was cooled by West Ham’s reported £85 million asking price for a player whose recent career includes back-to-back Premier League relegations.
United are believed to need three midfield signings this window and have only Santos confirmed. Chief executive Omar Berrada struck an optimistic tone last month, saying the club had a clear plan and were well prepared, but the window’s progress so far suggests the gap between ambition and execution remains significant.
With the World Cup ongoing and the window still open, there is time for United to improve their position — but the Ederson uncertainty is a reminder of how quickly a transfer can unravel, and how much work remains to be done.
