Mercedes honour Niki Lauda's legacy as family visits Red Bull Ring seven years on

Niki Lauda’s family returned to the Red Bull Ring this weekend as guests of the Mercedes Formula 1 team, marking a poignant homecoming at the Austrian Grand Prix seven years after the three-time world champion’s passing in 2019.

Mercedes confirmed the visit on social media, sharing images of Lauda’s son, Mathias, and his grandson, Lennon, alongside the Austrian driver’s iconic red cap and headset — items that have been permanently displayed in the Mercedes garage as a tribute since his death.

“A legacy that lives on. Special to have Niki’s family with us at his home race,” the team wrote on X.

Lauda served as Mercedes’ non-executive chairman during the team’s dominant turbo hybrid era and was widely credited as a driving force behind Lewis Hamilton’s move from McLaren ahead of the 2013 season. His influence on the Silver Arrows’ most successful period in the sport remains a defining part of the team’s identity.

In addition to the red cap and headset kept in the garage, Mercedes have also incorporated a single red star into their livery as a permanent nod to Lauda’s contribution to the team.

The visit drew a warm response from fans online, with the post accumulating more than 45,000 views. “A legendary legacy that continues to inspire the entire paddock every single day,” one supporter wrote, while another added: “Niki Lauda’s spirit will forever run deep through the veins of the Silver Arrows.”
