McTominay's Napoli future in doubt as contract talks stall amid injury return

Scott McTominay’s future at Napoli is uncertain after Italian outlet Tuttomercato Web reported that contract renewal talks between the Scotland international and the Serie A club have stalled, with a gap in valuations raising the prospect of a summer departure.

Nicholas Ceccarini, writing for the Italian publication, stated that “if the gap isn’t bridged, it’s clear that a transfer could become a reality this summer.” The report emphasises there is no imminent agreement between the two parties, and that unless a compromise is reached, the 29-year-old could leave the club he joined from Manchester United for more than £25m.

McTominay has been one of the standout performers in Serie A since his move to Naples, winning the Serie A Player of the Season award for his role in guiding Napoli to the Scudetto. His success has made him one of the most prominent examples of a British player thriving in a major European league.

The contract uncertainty arrives at a difficult moment for McTominay, who has been sidelined since late August after undergoing an ablation procedure — a minimally invasive operation to correct an irregular heart rhythm. The condition was discovered shortly after he was substituted before the hour mark in Napoli’s defeat to Como. He subsequently posted a message to supporters on Instagram: “See you soon Napoli. I won’t take long.”

Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna provided a timeline for his return, saying McTominay would rejoin the squad after the club’s fixture against Fiorentina and be available for the league match against Frosinone following the international break.

His absence also meant McTominay missed Napoli’s Champions League opener, a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal in which Martin Odegaard’s second-half strike proved decisive. Napoli will be looking to secure their first Champions League win of the campaign when they travel to Spain after the international break.
