Scott McTominay cut a furious figure after Napoli were beaten 4-1 by Porto in the Champions League on Wednesday night, a heavy defeat that laid bare growing tensions within Massimiliano Allegri’s squad.

The Scotland midfielder had actually levelled for Napoli in Portugal after Jan Bednarek’s opener gave the hosts the lead, but a disastrous final 20 minutes unravelled the visitors. Porto’s Gabri Veiga, Jakub Kiwior and Samu Aghehowa — the last of those from the penalty spot — completed a comprehensive win that leaves Napoli with just one victory from their opening four Champions League matches.

“I’m angry, of course I’m angry, we’ve just lost 4-1 in the Champions League,” McTominay told CBS Sports. “There’s nothing to smile about. For us, we need to go home and try to figure out ways how to fix it.”

The 28-year-old, who joined Napoli from Manchester United in 2024 and has been one of their standout performers in Serie A, pointed to a mounting injury list as a key factor. “We’ve got a lot of injuries and a lot of important players who can change matches,” he said. “Things like this can make a huge difference to a team when the same players are playing over and over again. People have to understand that, but also we need to do better. First and foremost, we need to do better.”

McTominay was not alone in venting post-match. Stand-in captain Matteo Politano, deputising for the absent Giovanni Di Lorenzo, delivered a pointed remark that appeared to target the club’s foreign contingent. “I wish another team-mate could come and explain things, not always us Italians,” Politano said.

The atmosphere inside the dressing room appears to be deteriorating further. Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that tension is running high under Allegri, and as the final whistle sounded in Porto, Kevin De Bruyne and Lorenzo Lucca were seen engaged in a heated on-pitch argument.

The turmoil comes at a sensitive moment off the pitch too. Napoli are still working to tie McTominay down to a new contract, with talks between his representatives and the club ongoing. The 29-year-old has yet to put pen to paper on an extension, adding an element of uncertainty to an already difficult period for the Italian club, who also sit eighth in Serie A.
