Fonseca leaves Lyon for Sporting CP, his beloved club, for five million euros
Paulo Fonseca has terminated his contract with Lyon to join Sporting CP, the club he has supported since childhood. Lyon's management, caught off guard by their coach's decision, was unable to retain him after he arrived in January 2025.
Paulo Fonseca has left Olympique Lyonnais to take charge of Sporting CP, his beloved club, in exchange for five million euros in compensation paid to the Rhône-based club. Lyon’s management, informed late of their coach’s decision after his arrival in January 2025, failed to keep him.
Presented in Lisbon, Fonseca made no bones about his choice. “The truth is that I’ve always had it in mind to progress in the best leagues, to face the best coaches, the best players, so as to arrive here today better prepared. I think I’m at the right moment in my career to be Sporting’s coach,” he told the Portuguese press.
The 51-year-old manager built his career through Paços de Ferreira, Braga and Porto in Portugal, before making a name for himself in Donetsk, then at Roma, LOSC and AC Milan. He describes his arrival at Sporting as the culmination of a deliberately planned path to prepare for this moment.
The emotional dimension weighed heavily in the decision. “I’ve been a fan since I was a child. I grew up thrilled by Jordan, Manuel Fernandes, then Carlos Xavier, Mario Jorge, Balakov, Luisinho, Douglas — I loved Douglas. That weighed heavily when the president invited me to come. There are dreams that come true and my dream has come true. I’m at the club of my heart,” Fonseca confided.
His mission at Sporting is clearly defined: bring the club back to the top of the Portuguese league. Currently third, behind FC Porto and Benfica, Sporting expects its new coach to unlock the potential of a young squad. “One thing that attracted and motivated me greatly is the quality of this young team. I’m sure we’ll build special things for Sporting all together. If I didn’t believe I was capable of getting the best out of this squad, I wouldn’t be here,” he concluded.
