Mbemba and Wissa propel DR Congo to top of 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying
Thanks to a header from Chancel Mbemba in the 4th minute and a second goal from Yoane Wissa in the second half, DR Congo won 2-0 against Equatorial Guinea in the first match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying round.
DR Congo launched their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea at the Stade des Martyrs in the first match of Group E.
The Leopards left no doubt about their intentions from the start. In the 4th minute, Chancel Mbemba, the former Olympique de Marseille defender, rose above the defence on a free kick to place an unstoppable header and open the scoring.
In the second half, Yoane Wissa, who played for Lorient before establishing himself in the Premier League, added a second goal to seal the Congolese success. This brace from two former Ligue 1 players proved enough to dominate an Equatorial Guinea side with no answer.
With this victory, DR Congo provisionally top Group E of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.
