Mbappé surpasses Raúl and becomes the youngest centenarian in Champions League history
By scoring his 72nd Champions League goal in Real Madrid's 4-3 victory over AS Roma, Kylian Mbappé overtook Raúl in the competition's all-time top scorers list and set a record for precocity by playing his 100th European match at age 27.
Kylian Mbappé reached two historic milestones in a single evening on Wednesday, as Real Madrid won 4-3 away at AS Roma in the Champions League.
By opening his account in the 25th minute with a long-range shot deflected by a Roma defender, the French striker scored his 72nd goal in the competition, surpassing Real Madrid legend Raúl (71 goals) to claim sole fifth place on the all-time Champions League top scorers list. The next identifiable target is Karim Benzema and his 90 goals, an objective considered achievable in the medium term. The podium — Lewandowski (109), Messi (129) and Ronaldo (140) — remains a distant prospect.
This match was also Mbappé’s 100th in the Champions League. By reaching this milestone at 27 years and 298 days, the Bondy native claims a precocity record previously held by Lionel Messi, who played his hundredth European match at 28 years and 84 days while wearing FC Barcelona’s colours.
The evening had nearly turned into a nightmare for Real Madrid. Trailing 3-1 with ten minutes remaining, the Merengue pulled off the most spectacular turnaround imaginable: three goals scored from corners in a completely wild finale, to snatch a 4-3 victory as unexpected as it was essential for their standing.
