Kylian Mbappe scored a stunning second-half opener but was withdrawn as a precaution in France’s 2-0 World Cup quarter-final victory over Morocco in Boston on Thursday, leaving his fitness a concern ahead of the semi-finals.

Mbappe, who had missed a first-half penalty, broke the deadlock with a fine finish after the interval to draw level with Lionel Messi at the top of the golden boot standings on eight goals. Ousmane Dembele then doubled France’s lead to put the tie beyond doubt.

The Real Madrid forward’s evening was cut short in the 78th minute after Morocco defender Issa Diop caught him with a challenge that earned a yellow card and left Mbappe visibly in pain. Didier Deschamps, unwilling to risk his captain with the knockout stages deepening, replaced him with Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Mbappe was pictured with ice strapped to his ankle on the substitutes’ bench, though he did not appear to be in significant distress. He was also seen celebrating freely with his teammates after the final whistle, offering an encouraging sign for France’s prospects.

Les Bleus now have five days before their semi-final, giving the medical staff time to assess the extent of any damage to the ankle. Deschamps will be hoping the precautionary substitution proves exactly that, with France’s campaign hinging heavily on their captain’s availability.
