Olise clears yellow card threat to stay available for France's World Cup semifinal
Michael Olise escaped a second booking in France's 2-0 quarterfinal win over Morocco on Thursday, meaning the Bayern Munich winger is free to face Spain or Belgium in Tuesday's semifinal at Dallas.
Michael Olise will be available for France’s World Cup semifinal after completing the full 90 minutes of their 2-0 quarterfinal victory over Morocco on Thursday at Boston Stadium without picking up a yellow card.
The Bayern Munich winger had been walking a disciplinary tightrope. A booking in France’s round-of-16 win over Paraguay meant a second yellow card against Morocco would have triggered an automatic suspension. He came through unscathed, and with yellow cards resetting after the quarterfinal stage, Olise enters the last four with a clean slate.
France will face the winner of Spain versus Belgium in Tuesday’s semifinal at Dallas stadium.
Olise has been one of the tournament’s standout performers, registering five assists in six appearances. That tally makes him the first player to reach five assists at a single World Cup since Germany’s Thomas Hässler achieved the feat at USA 94. One more assist would draw him level with Pelé’s all-time record for assists in a single World Cup edition.
