Mbappé must adapt to new ball for Spain semi-final

Kylian Mbappé approaches the World Cup semi-final against Spain on Tuesday with an unprecedented parameter: the ball changes. The Trionda, used since the tournament’s kick-off, gives way to the Trionda Final for the competition’s final four matches.

The timing is notable. Mbappé is one of the players who has best exploited the official ball’s characteristics: three of his eight goals have been scored from long range, including a missile against Senegal and a beauty at the edge of the box against Morocco in the quarter-finals. With eight goals in six matches, the French captain shares the top of the scoring chart with Lionel Messi. During Saturday’s training session, he inspected the new ball thoroughly.

FIFA has sought to reassure on performance continuity. “The ball retains the same four-panel construction, the same panel shape and the same surface structure as the Trionda, guaranteeing identical performance on the pitch,” the governing body stated. It specifies that “deliberately deep seams and strategically placed surface textures” promote “optimal aerodynamics and great trajectory stability.”

On the aesthetic front, the Trionda Final pays tribute to the host cities of the final phase — Dallas, Atlanta, Miami and New York — whose names are integrated directly into the panel patterns via a typographic approach. The tournament’s other host cities appear in triangular graphic elements distributed across the ball’s surface.

Mbappé, who had missed his penalty against Morocco before redeeming himself with this third long-range goal, nonetheless appears to approach this semi-final in a state of high confidence. The question of adaptation to the new ball remains open, even if FIFA guarantees technical continuity between the two models.
