Mbappe edges Messi by assists as Haaland and Kane close in on World Cup 2026 Golden Boot
Kylian Mbappe leads the World Cup 2026 Golden Boot race on eight goals, level with Lionel Messi but ahead on assists, while Erling Haaland sits third on seven and Harry Kane fourth on six as the quarter-finals unfold.
Kylian Mbappe holds a narrow lead in the World Cup 2026 Golden Boot standings after reaching eight goals at the tournament, drawing level with Lionel Messi on goals but pulling ahead on assists as the competition enters the quarter-final stage.
Mbappe’s tally has been built steadily across the knockout rounds: a brace against Senegal in the group stage was followed by a goal against Iraq and a second double against Sweden in the round of 32. He then converted a penalty against Paraguay in the last 16 and added another in the quarter-finals against Morocco, despite missing a spot-kick earlier in that game. His three assists give him the edge over Messi should the pair finish level.
Messi’s route to eight goals has been equally prolific. An opening hat-trick against Algeria was followed by a double against Austria — a game notable for a penalty miss before he recovered to break the all-time World Cup scoring record. A goal off the bench against Jordan preceded further strikes in knockout wins over Cape Verde and Egypt.
Erling Haaland sits third on seven goals after netting twice against Brazil in the round of 16, extending his scoring run to 14 consecutive international matches for Norway. Harry Kane is fourth on six, having rescued England with a brace against DR Congo before adding a goal against Mexico, where Jude Bellingham also moved into contention with his third and fourth goals of the tournament to join a cluster of players on four.
Where players are tied on goals, assists serve as the first tiebreaker, followed by minutes played and goals-per-minute ratio.
