Kevin Vallejos turned Aljamain Sterling’s referee frustration into pre-fight ammunition on Monday, quipping that UFC CEO Dana White had personally confirmed Dan Miragliotta would officiate their co-main event at UFC Qatar on 21 November at ABHA Arena in Doha.

The jab landed after Sterling went public with his anger over Miragliotta’s decision to stand up Renato Moicano and Tom Nolan during UFC Vegas 123, at a moment when Moicano had Nolan’s back in the second round. Nolan recovered to finish Moicano in the third, a result Sterling found infuriating enough to contemplate a cage invasion.

“I felt like I was close to storming that cage,” Sterling said on his YouTube channel. “I was angry, I was fuming. Even this morning, I was daydreaming: what possessed this man to do such a thing? Criminal.”

Vallejos, who carries an 18-1 record into the bout, responded directly to Sterling’s post with a single line designed to needle the former bantamweight champion: “Dana told me that Dan Miragliotta will be my referee.”

The joke carries a pointed edge. Sterling (26-5) is widely regarded as one of the best back-control grapplers in the division, and Miragliotta’s willingness to stand fighters up from dominant positions is precisely the kind of officiating that could blunt that weapon. Whether intentional strategy or pure wind-up, Vallejos has identified a pressure point and pressed it publicly.

Sterling’s outburst over a fight he had no stake in signals how seriously he takes grappling-based refereeing decisions — and Vallejos, a heavy underdog heading into Doha, appears content to keep that nerve exposed in the weeks before they meet.
