Emiliano Martinez was stretchered off the pitch after a serious head collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during Chelsea’s Premier League match at Hill Dickinson Stadium, with the Argentine goalkeeper receiving approximately 10 minutes of on-field medical attention before being carried down the tunnel.
The incident occurred when Martinez came off his line to collect a cross into the Everton box, with Branthwaite simultaneously attempting to reach the ball. Both players stayed down immediately after the clash, prompting swift intervention from medical staff on both sides.
Branthwaite was able to return to his feet after a couple of minutes, having passed concussion checks performed by Everton’s team physios on the pitch. Martinez, however, required considerably more attention from Chelsea’s medical staff, who worked cautiously before calling for the stretcher.
The 32-year-old was eventually carried off to applause from the Chelsea supporters, with the positive sign that he appeared to be moving his arms as he was taken straight down the tunnel.
Martinez was replaced in the 73rd minute by Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders, who came on to make his Premier League debut with Chelsea leading 1-0. Penders had been brought to Stamford Bridge as backup cover and was thrust into the action under difficult circumstances.
The incident cast a shadow over proceedings at Hill Dickinson Stadium, with the severity of the collision drawing immediate concern from players, staff, and supporters on both sides.
