Maresca says Fernandes deserved red card too after Foden's derby dismissal

Enzo Maresca accepted Phil Foden’s red card at Old Trafford on Sunday but insisted Bruno Fernandes should have been sent off in the same incident, as Manchester City beat Manchester United with ten men in a derby settled by Erling Haaland’s solitary goal.

Foden was dismissed in the 23rd minute after retaliating to a challenge by Fernandes, who escaped without punishment. Maresca did not dispute the decision against his own player, but made clear he felt the United midfielder’s intent was equally punishable.

“I think Phil Foden’s red card is a red card but I also think in the same action it’s a red card from Bruno,” Maresca said. “Reviewing the action, it is a clear red card for Phil because it is a reaction, but you can also see Bruno’s intention — so it’s a red card for Phil but it’s also a red card for Bruno.”

The game’s other flashpoint came when Haaland slotted home the only goal of the match with Enzo Fernandez in an offside-adjacent position. Maresca said the fourth official confirmed Haaland was onside and that Fernandez was not interfering with play, leaving him with nothing further to contest.

“For the goal, the fourth official said to me that Erling was onside and they were just checking on the action,” he said. “I think Erling was onside and Enzo doesn’t interfere with the action.”

Maresca himself was booked late in the first half after disputing a refereeing call, and sprinted down the touchline at the final whistle to celebrate with City supporters. The Italian drew a parallel with a similar experience from his time as Chelsea manager.

“Last year with 10 players, red card after two minutes — this season with a red card, the emotion was there,” he said. “To win a game with 10 players is already special, but it’s even more special when it’s a Manchester derby — for the fans, the club, the players, and for the coaching staff.”

The victory keeps City in contention near the top of the Premier League table and hands United a damaging home defeat, with the officiating debate certain to continue in the days ahead.
