Scott McTominay’s future at Napoli is increasingly uncertain after contract extension talks stalled over a significant wage gap, with the Scotland midfielder demanding between £6.8m and £7.7m per season through to 2030 — a figure the Italian club’s finances currently cannot accommodate.

McTominay, 29, left Manchester United in August 2024 and has thrived in Naples, winning the Scudetto and the Supercoppa Italiana and establishing himself as a supporters’ favourite. Yet despite those achievements, negotiations over a new deal have dragged on for months without resolution.

“It’s not easy, but we’re trying,” Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna said last month. Talks are expected to resume once McTominay returns to action following surgery for a benign cardiac arrhythmia, which has also kept him out of Scotland’s current international fixtures.

According to Corriere dello Sport, McTominay is keen to extend his stay in Naples but only on terms he considers fair, leaving the outcome of negotiations genuinely open.

Harry Amass set for January loan

Back at Old Trafford, Manchester United are planning to trigger the 12-month extension clause in teenage left-back Harry Amass’s contract before sending him out on loan in January to gain first-team experience.

The 19-year-old came close to leaving the club in the summer as United were prepared to allow several academy players to depart, but he remained and has since featured under manager Michael Carrick. Amass joined United in 2023 from Watford’s academy, turning down Chelsea to do so, and made his first senior start for the club in April 2025.

International update

United return to Premier League action in seven days, with a number of first-team players still on international duty. Of the 13 senior players originally called up during the break, several have since withdrawn through injury — Kobbie Mainoo, Karl Darlow, Marcus Rashford, and Benjamin Sesko all failed to report for their national teams, while Patrick Dorgu returned to the club early after sustaining a hamstring injury with Denmark.

Bruno Fernandes picked up a knock but returned to action for Portugal, contributing two assists in a 4-2 win over Denmark. Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro received late call-ups to the Netherlands and France squads respectively.
