Manchester United set for £19m windfall as Greenwood nears £38.6m Roma move
Manchester United could receive up to 50 per cent of Mason Greenwood's next transfer fee after inserting a sell-on clause when they sold him to Marseille in 2024. Roma are preparing a €45m offer for the 24-year-old, who has reportedly agreed a five-year deal with the Serie A club.
Manchester United stand to pocket a significant sell-on fee as Mason Greenwood edges closer to a move from Marseille to Roma, with the Serie A club preparing a formal offer believed to be worth around €45m (£38.6m) including bonuses.
Greenwood, 24, has reportedly agreed personal terms with Roma on a five-year contract worth a guaranteed £3.9m per year, according to Calciomercato.com. Sky Sport Italia reports that Roma will now make their first official approach to Marseille, though the Ligue 1 club are holding out for €55m (£47.1m). Reports suggest the two clubs are expected to find common ground.
United inserted a sell-on clause entitling them to up to 50 per cent of any future transfer fee when they sold Greenwood to Marseille for £26.6m in 2024. If a deal is concluded at or near Marseille’s asking price, United could stand to receive close to £19m — a meaningful injection into a transfer budget that has been under pressure since INEOS took over.
Roma’s interest is long-standing. The Italian club made contact with Greenwood’s father as far back as May, and the player is said to have been drawn to the project. However, they are not alone in their pursuit. Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone is reported to have personally requested the forward, with the Spanish club facing a rebuild after losing Antoine Griezmann and Nico Gonzalez, and the future of Julian Alvarez still uncertain. Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, and Fenerbahce have also been credited with interest, and reports from Turkey claim two Fenerbahce officials have travelled to France to attempt to finalise a deal.
Greenwood’s appeal is easy to understand. He scored 26 goals and contributed 11 assists across all competitions in 2025/26, earning a place in Ligue 1’s team of the season. After collecting that award, he expressed a desire to remain in Marseille: “Ligue 1 is a wonderful league. We play incredible matches and, for me, it’s one of the best leagues I’ve played in. I hope I can stay.”
Greenwood left Old Trafford after United concluded he could no longer remain at the club following his 2022 suspension, when he was charged with attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour. He denied all charges, which were subsequently dropped. After a loan spell at Getafe, he joined Marseille permanently and has since rebuilt his career to the point where he is now one of the most sought-after forwards in European football.
