Manchester United have agreed a £50m deal to sign midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea, with the 22-year-old set to become the second Brazilian Michael Carrick brings to Old Trafford this summer. The fee is structured as an initial £48m plus £2m in add-ons.

Santos will join alongside Ederson, whom United are finalising a separate £35m move for from Atalanta. The double acquisition represents a significant reshaping of Carrick’s midfield, accelerated by the departure of Casemiro from Old Trafford and a knee injury sustained by Manuel Ugarte at the World Cup.

United had pursued other targets before turning to Santos. Elliot Anderson moved from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City in a £116m deal, while Tottenham secured Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85m. Aurelien Tchouameni and Adam Wharton were also considered by the club during their search for reinforcements.

For Chelsea, the sale represents a substantial profit on a player they acquired for £18m. Santos’ departure takes the club’s summer income beyond £110m, following the sales of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid and Tyrique George to Everton. The deal was facilitated after Real Madrid publicly denied interest in Enzo Fernandez, making it more likely the Argentine will remain at Stamford Bridge and removing a potential obstacle to Santos’ exit.
