Manchester United revoke 685 season tickets in touting crackdown as fan groups call for derby protest

Manchester United have revoked 685 season tickets after an investigation into organised ticket touting, the club confirmed ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby, with fan group The 1958 calling for a protest outside Old Trafford in response to what it described as a “season ticket ban fiasco”.

The club stated that bans were issued where there was “significant misuse of the ticketing system for financial gain”, including the operation of organised networks controlling and distributing tickets from hundreds of accounts. A further 464 supporters received reduced penalties or final warnings, while 1,617 accounts were flagged for additional examination due to “unusual activity”.

Of the 685 supporters who received bans, 113 failed to respond to requests for information, 73 did not appeal, and 499 had their bans upheld by an independent appeals board. United said all season tickets released through the process would be offered to supporters on the waiting list.

The investigation, carried out by an independent firm examining activity on the club’s ticketing platform between March and June, drew sharp criticism after a number of supporters who believed themselves innocent faced potential sanctions. United acknowledged the process had “caused significant concern and distress for some supporters” and admitted they had “underestimated how common sharing account usernames and passwords was”.

The club also conceded that “some fans may have felt they were being treated unfairly” — a rare public admission that the crackdown had overreached in places.

Fan group The 1958 has urged supporters to “stand united” ahead of Sunday’s derby with Manchester City, declaring that “a line has been crossed”. A spokesperson said: “Manchester United supporter groups are being called upon to all stand together following reports of bans and season ticket sanctions without clear and compelling evidence always being presented.”

“For generations, match-going Reds have given their time, money and loyalty to Manchester United, home and away. That loyalty deserves to be treated with respect. This is not about one group or one individual. It is about how Manchester United treats its match-going supporters.”

Supporters backing the protest are asked to assemble outside Old Trafford’s Bishop Blaize pub at 3pm on Sunday.
