Manchester United have revived their interest in Fulham midfielder Sander Berge, according to reports, with manager Michael Carrick making the Norway international a target as he continues to reshape his midfield this summer.

Berge, 28, impressed at the 2026 World Cup, starting five of Norway’s six matches as the Scandinavian nation reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by England. That performance appears to have accelerated United’s pursuit, with reports claiming renewed contact has been made with the player’s camp.

Carrick has already moved quickly in the transfer window, bringing in Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa earlier this week. A third midfield addition is understood to be on the agenda, and Berge has emerged as the leading candidate for that role.

The potential transfer would draw a line under a saga that stretches back to January 2020, when United fans became convinced Berge was on the verge of joining the club. With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in charge and Berge’s compatriot at the helm, speculation was rife that the then-Genk midfielder would move to Old Trafford during the winter window.

The frenzy reached its peak when an unidentified individual was photographed in the backseat of a Mercedes being driven into Carrington Training Centre. Supporters immediately identified the mystery passenger as Berge, convinced a deal was imminent. The theory unravelled two days later when Berge signed for Sheffield United instead, leaving the identity of the Carrington visitor unresolved to this day.

Since joining Fulham in 2024, Berge has established himself as one of the more consistent midfielders in the Premier League. He featured in 35 of their 38 league games last season as the club finished 11th, a single point outside European qualification. Should United’s interest materialise into a formal offer, Berge would be trading a settled role at Craven Cottage for a return to the speculation that has followed him since that mistaken sighting in Manchester six years ago.
