Manchester United’s alarming lack of physical output is not an isolated incident but a defining pattern of their season, with FotMob data showing the club rank 16th in the Premier League for distance covered per match after five games under Michael Carrick.

The Red Devils salvaged a 1-1 draw at Fulham on Sunday, with Matheus Cunha’s deflected strike sparing them a third league defeat of the campaign. But it was the effort levels — or lack of them — that drew the sharpest criticism. Liverpool, for instance, prop up the distance table with 110.3km per match yet remain one of only five unbeaten sides in the top flight. The statistic is therefore not a verdict on fitness alone, but in United’s case it compounds a broader picture of a side that has managed just one win in five games and currently sits 12th.

The combination of poor results and damning physical data increases the pressure on Carrick barely a month into the season, with the manager needing an immediate upturn in both performances and points to ease growing scrutiny on his position.
