Manchester United are targeting a second West Ham player this summer, with the club understood to have approached the relegated Hammers about winger Crysencio Summerville while talks over midfielder Mateus Fernandes are already under way.

Midfield reinforcement remains United’s primary objective under Michael Carrick, and a deal to sign Ederson from Atalanta has already been agreed. Fernandes, 21, is considered a top target to follow the Brazilian to Old Trafford, with discussions involving the Portuguese midfielder’s agent having begun. Fernandes is expected to leave West Ham following their relegation from the Premier League and is said to be keen on the move.

Summerville has now emerged as a secondary target. According to The Athletic, United are among several clubs monitoring the 24-year-old Dutch winger, who caught the eye at the World Cup — including a notable goal in the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw with Japan. His versatility makes him an appealing option should United decide to strengthen out wide, though the club would likely need to pay around £50 million, with Summerville still holding three years on his West Ham contract.

United’s experience in last summer’s transfer window, when they signed Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo from the Premier League, has informed their preference for players who require no adaptation period. Summerville, having already established himself in England’s top flight, fits that profile.

Whether United ultimately pursue Summerville may hinge on the future of Marcus Rashford. The 28-year-old joined Barcelona on loan last summer with an option to buy that was widely expected to be exercised, but Barcelona’s subsequent £70 million signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle has complicated matters, leaving Rashford’s situation unresolved. He has two years remaining on his United contract, and if he returns, the club would likely shelve plans for another wide attacker.

For now, Fernandes appears the more advanced pursuit, with Summerville representing a contingency that could become a priority depending on how the Rashford situation develops.
