Manchester City edge controversial derby as United's 10-man advantage counts for nothing

Manchester City claimed a controversial 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, with Erling Haaland’s winning goal subsequently acknowledged by Pro Ref to have been invalid — Enzo Fernandez was interfering with play from an offside position. The result leaves United with four points from their opening four Premier League fixtures.

The match turned on a red card for Phil Foden on 23 minutes after the City midfielder lashed out at Bruno Fernandes, handing United a numerical advantage they were unable to convert. Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo both struck the post from distance, and Bryan Mbeumo was denied in stoppage time by a brilliant Gianluigi Donnarumma save — the sum total of United’s clearest opportunities on the night.

Despite the man advantage, City controlled large portions of the contest, and on the balance of play the visitors arguably merited the three points regardless of the officiating controversy.

United manager Michael Carrick was measured in his post-match assessment, declining to single out his players for criticism. “I can’t be too critical of the players and I won’t be, because I think we’ve done a lot of good things in that area particularly,” Carrick said when asked why United resorted to long-range efforts. “So today we didn’t quite find what we needed.”

Carrick acknowledged that failing to score was an anomaly rather than a pattern. “All the games we’ve won here, we’ve scored at least two goals, and we’ve lost one game and we scored in that game. So it’s the first time — there’s certainly a bit of context in that as well.”

He remained broadly supportive of his attacking players despite the blank. “I think we’ve got some really good creative players who’ve scored and created goals a lot. When we look at it as an isolated game, yeah, of course, we would hope for more in general from the team, and we certainly wanted to score a goal, and we didn’t today.”

The defeat compounds a difficult start to the 2026/27 Premier League season for United, who now face mounting pressure to convert performances into results as the campaign develops.
