Man Utd paid Amorim £8.5m severance as club posts record £677.6m revenue despite £47m loss

Manchester United paid Ruben Amorim £8.5m in severance after dismissing the Portuguese manager in January, the club confirmed in its full-year financial results for the year ended 30 June 2025.

Amorim was sacked after 14 months at Old Trafford, with a 1-1 draw at rivals Leeds proving the final straw well before his two-and-a-half year contract was due to expire. United’s third-quarter results published in May had flagged a maximum exposure of £16.7m for his exit and that of his staff, but the final bill was significantly reduced after Amorim took the AC Milan job, bringing that liability down to £8.5m.

The figure is still notable, though it is just over half the pay-off handed to predecessor Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed in 2024 three months after United triggered a one-year extension on his deal following their FA Cup win.

Despite the severance costs, United posted record revenues of £677.6m for the financial year — up from the previous record of £666.5m — even without European football. The club recorded a pre-tax loss of almost £47m, which insiders described as evidence of the continued need for financial discipline.

Chief executive Omar Berrada said the results demonstrated the underlying strength of the business. “This shows the direct impact of the work we have been doing over the past two years,” he said. “It also proves Manchester United’s enduring popularity and commercial strength.”

United’s wage bill fell £11.3m year-on-year to £302m, a 3.6 per cent drop the club attributed to changes in the men’s first-team squad and ongoing headcount reduction programmes.

Looking ahead, United have issued revenue guidance of £740m to £760m for the coming year, buoyed by their return to the Champions League.
