Genesio feels betrayed by OM, departure before Christmas deemed likely

Bruno Genesio is under pressure at Olympique de Marseille. After just one Ligue 1 victory since the opening day and a 4-1 defeat to Besiktas in the Europa League, the Marseille coach finds himself in an increasingly precarious situation, worsened by deep tensions with the board.

According to L’Équipe journalist Loïc Tanzi, an immediate sacking is nonetheless financially out of reach for the club. “No, OM cannot sack him. He earns 400,000 euros gross per month. OM doesn’t have the means to sack him,” he explains. But the budget constraint is not enough to mask the growing unease.

Genesio himself is said to be making no secret of his bitterness. Still according to Tanzi, the coach “feels cheated at OM”: he believes the project that was sold to him upon his arrival does not match current reality, and that he should have had a more competitive squad. More seriously, he says he is being deprived of support from his hierarchy.

His public statements are beginning to irritate internally. “His comments are annoying people internally now. We don’t understand why Genesio, press conference after press conference, keeps talking about his board, when he knew the Marseille environment,” the journalist details.

Another point of friction concerns the management of young players. An explicit mission was reportedly entrusted to him at the start of the season: “He was asked to play young players, develop them, help them progress so they could be sold, which he is not doing today.”

In this toxic climate, a source cited by L’Équipe makes a harsh prediction: “If he’s still here at Christmas, it would be a major surprise, given the current tensions.” An assessment that sums up the scale of the crisis shaking the Phocaean club at the start of the season.
