Manchester United face losing highly rated teenage forward JJ Gabriel after the youngster turned 16, crossing the legal threshold that now allows him to be represented by an agent and pursue a move to a European club.

Gabriel made headlines last month when he submitted a request to cancel his registration at United’s Carrington training ground, a move the club refused. The timing was significant: because he was 15 at the time, he could not legally be represented by an agent, giving United a degree of protection. That protection has now expired.

With his birthday now passed, Gabriel is also eligible to sign for a foreign club using his Irish passport, which he holds through his father, Joe O’Cearuill — a former Arsenal academy product who made two appearances for the Republic of Ireland in the mid-2000s. Gabriel also carries Cypriot heritage through his mother, broadening his international options further.

Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Barcelona have all been linked with the teenager. The Daily Mail reported that super-agents Ali Barat and Jorge Mendes are keen to secure Gabriel’s representation and guide him to his preferred destination. Barat had already been managing the situation on behalf of the player’s family but previously required formal authorisation to act — a formality that no longer applies.

Gabriel has not trained at Carrington since submitting his exit request and has instead been working with private coach Jack Hunter in Castelldefels, on the outskirts of Barcelona.

United’s Under-18 head coach Michael Carrick had previously urged patience, saying: “He’s a young boy, it’s important we don’t put anything out here — the exposure and scrutiny we have to be careful. We have to be sensible and think about him. The situation will work itself out.”

The financial stakes are stark. If Gabriel moves abroad, United would be entitled to approximately £300,000 in compensation — a fraction of what they would receive were he to join an English club. The Sun has reported that United are now considering regulatory and potentially legal action against any party that attempts to negotiate his departure, with talks involving Real Madrid and Bayern Munich said to be ongoing.
