JJ Gabriel's suspension and 16th birthday put 70-year Man Utd record out of reach
Manchester United academy prodigy JJ Gabriel, who turns 16 today, is running out of time to break David Gaskell's 1956 appearance record after requesting to leave the club and ceasing training at Carrington.
JJ Gabriel’s chances of becoming Manchester United’s youngest-ever first-team player are fading fast, with the 15-year-old having asked to leave the club last month and not trained at Carrington for more than a fortnight.
Gaskell’s record has stood since 1956, when the goalkeeper made his debut aged 16 years and 19 days in the FA Charity Shield. Gabriel, who turns 16 today (Tuesday, 6 October), now has fewer than three weeks to surpass that mark — a window that looks increasingly unrealistic given the breakdown in relations between his representatives and the club.
The teenager had been on course to break the record in United’s Carabao Cup tie against Brighton in September, a match for which he was reportedly set to be selected. Premier League age regulations had already kept him out of contention last season, stipulating that players must have turned 15 on or before 31 August of the relevant campaign. Gabriel only became eligible for official senior football at the start of the 2025-26 season, having made an unofficial appearance in a pre-season friendly in August.
Instead of making history at Old Trafford, Gabriel shocked club bosses by requesting that his academy registration be cancelled. He has since been maintaining his fitness in Barcelona, with reports linking him to the Catalan club, PSG, and Real Madrid.
His possession of an EU passport means he will be eligible to join a European Union club as early as next week, subject to FIFA approval. International transfers involving players under 18 are governed by strict regulations, and Gabriel’s representatives will need to satisfy specific criteria before any move can be sanctioned. It is understood they would not have pursued an exit without confidence in their ability to clear those hurdles.
United, for their part, remain hopeful of finding a resolution that keeps Gabriel at the club. The teenager and his family have been regular visitors to Barcelona, where he has worked with specialist coaches, and discussions with several clubs are said to be ongoing.
With the record deadline ticking down and no return to training in sight, the prospect of Gabriel rewriting United’s history books before his window closes appears slim.
