JJ Gabriel, Manchester United’s most highly-rated academy player, formally requested the cancellation of his academy registration last month, stunning the club just as he was set to become its youngest-ever competitive player.

The 15-year-old had been included in Michael Carrick’s squad to face Brighton in the Carabao Cup — a fixture that would have made him the youngest player to appear for United in a competitive match. Instead, the BBC reported that Gabriel and his representatives believe promises made about his route to the first team have not been fulfilled. His camp also sought greater involvement in first-team squads once the season began, according to separate reports.

Gabriel travelled with United’s squad for much of pre-season but received only eight senior minutes, coming against Atletico Madrid. He has not trained with the club since scoring a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut against Sabah on 10 September, and has since been in Barcelona. Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain have all been linked with the youngster. Barcelona sporting director Deco publicly denied his club’s involvement in any deal, despite Gabriel being present in the city.

United have not released the player and had been hoping to repair the relationship. Gabriel turned 16 this week, making him eligible to sign scholarship terms, though he cannot sign a professional contract in England until he is 17.

Born Joseph Junior Andreou O’Cearuill in London on 6 October 2010 and raised in Enfield, Gabriel is the son of former Republic of Ireland international Joe O’Cearuill, who later changed the family surname to Gabriel. A YouTube video of the nine-year-old’s skills went viral, earning him the nickname ‘Kid Messi’ and attracting attention from Chelsea, Arsenal and West Ham before he joined United at 11 in 2022, with his family relocating to the north-west.

His profile has continued to grow rapidly. Gabriel made his England Under-15s debut in February 2025 and signed a long-term sponsorship deal with Nike the following month — markers of a reputation that had already extended well beyond academy football before the dispute with United came to a head.
