Ian Wright claims he has proof Vinicius Jr was heading to Arsenal before Real Madrid U-turn
Sky Sports pundit Ian Wright insisted on air that Vinicius Junior was genuinely set to join Arsenal this summer, promising to produce 'proof' after Jamie Carragher dismissed the move as something that 'was never happening'. The Brazilian ultimately signed a new six-year deal at Real Madrid.
Ian Wright has claimed he holds evidence that Vinicius Junior was on course to join Arsenal before the Brazilian forward signed a new six-year contract at Real Madrid, sparking a pointed on-air dispute with fellow pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher.
Speaking during pre-match coverage of Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Coventry City, Wright was asked by Neville about the Gunners’ incoming transfer business. The former Arsenal striker referenced the Vinicius pursuit before pivoting to the club’s reported interest in Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez, saying: “They were talking about… I don’t know if Alvarez is coming. Obviously, then went for Vini, I know that was happening, people laughed at me. You two laughed.”
Carragher’s flat rebuttal — “That was never happening” — prompted Wright to double down. “At some stage, I’ll show you, I’ll show you the proof,” he replied, though he stopped short of revealing what that proof actually was.
Neville and Carragher appeared unconvinced throughout the exchange, and Wright did not elaborate further on the nature of his evidence during the broadcast.
The Vinicius saga was one of the more high-profile transfer stories of the summer window, with the winger’s future the subject of prolonged speculation before he committed his future to the Bernabéu. His decision to stay in Madrid effectively ended Arsenal’s pursuit.
With that avenue closed, Arsenal have turned their attention to Álvarez, the Argentina international who won the World Cup in 2022 and the Champions League with Manchester City before moving to Atlético Madrid. Whether that deal materialises remains to be seen, but Wright’s comments suggest the club’s ambitions in the market remain significant — and that the Vinicius chapter may not be quite as straightforward as it appeared from the outside.
