Manchester City have completed the signing of teenage goalkeeper Max Chabot from French club Angers, with the 18-year-old joining the club after impressing on trial during the summer. Midfielder Charlie Gray, 20, is simultaneously edging closer to a season-long loan move to League One side Wigan Athletic.

Chabot, described as a towering presence between the posts, played the full 90 minutes for City’s Under-21s in a 4-1 EFL Trophy win at Mansfield on Wednesday, making several fine saves before a late consolation denied him a debut clean sheet. He had previously travelled with the City first team on their summer tour of Asia as an international trialist, with the club needing additional goalkeeping cover after Oli Whatmuff departed on loan to Stockport County.

City will now assess whether to send Chabot out on loan or retain him within the academy setup for the season ahead.

Gray, meanwhile, watched Wigan’s EFL Trophy fixture against Aston Villa on Tuesday and was absent from the Under-21s squad for the Mansfield game, with his move to the Brick Community Stadium expected to be finalised in the coming days. Should the deal complete in time, he could feature in Wigan’s League One clash with Leyton Orient on Saturday.

The midfielder has been at City since joining the academy as an under-nine and has collected both an FA Youth Cup and a Premier League 2 title during his development. He made his first-team debut last December, coming off the bench in a League Cup victory over Brentford, and signed a new contract at the Etihad in the summer — underlining the club’s long-term belief in his potential.

City are expected to sanction several further academy loan moves before the transfer window closes, with a number of young players earmarked for spells away from the Etihad to accelerate their development.
