Islam Makhachev has publicly backed his AKA teammate Usman Nurmagomedov to sign with the UFC, telling Russian outlet Match TV he is “90%” certain the undefeated lightweight will make the move following the expiry of his Professional Fighters League contract.

Nurmagomedov, who has never lost as a professional, wrapped up his PFL deal with a knockout victory over Archie Colgan, immediately raising questions about where he would compete next. Reports had previously indicated he turned down a $2 million-per-fight offer to remain with the PFL, and Makhachev’s comments now represent the strongest public signal yet that a UFC signing is close.

“It’s the perfect move for him. He needs to prove he’s the best in the world. He could face a Top 10 rival and soon earn a title shot,” Makhachev said. “He grew up alongside Khabib and me, has trained with the best from the start of his career and has extensive experience working with champions; now is the best time for him to join the UFC.”

Makhachev stopped short of making the move a certainty but left little doubt about his expectation. “I can’t give you 100% answer,” he added. “But 90%? Yes. I think Usman has already grown beyond where he is now. Not many people are interested anymore in seeing him fight rematches in the PFL. I think right now is the perfect time for him to come to the UFC. There are so many dangerous guys in the division. He can prove that he’s the best in the world. It’s all leading to something good.”

The UFC lightweight division is the one Makhachev currently rules as champion, and the same weight class where their mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov — Usman’s cousin — retired undefeated in 2020. Makhachev framed a UFC move as the natural next step for a fighter who has spent his entire career training alongside world champions and has nothing left to prove at his current level.

Usman Nurmagomedov enters free agency as one of the most coveted unsigned fighters in MMA, and Makhachev’s public endorsement is likely to intensify speculation around a deal in the coming weeks.
