Manchester United began pre-season training at Carrington on Monday, with a mixed group of first-team regulars and academy prospects the first to report under new head coach Michael Carrick.

With a significant portion of the squad still absent — either competing at the World Cup or resting after early eliminations — the opening days of pre-season offer a window of opportunity for younger players to catch Carrick’s eye in his first summer in charge at Old Trafford.

Harry Amass, Shea Lacey, centre-back Tyler Fredricson and midfielder Jack Fletcher were among the academy graduates seen checking in at Carrington. Toby Collyer, 22, was also present; the midfielder is expected to feature early in pre-season but remains likely to depart on loan before the transfer window closes.

On the senior side, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Mason Mount were all back in training having missed England’s World Cup squad, as was defender Ayden Heaven. Leny Yoro returned after failing to make France’s squad, while Joshua Zirkzee was back following his omission from the Netherlands’ travelling party. Dermot Mee also reported having recently signed a new two-year contract with the club.

Patrick Dorgu was available for a full pre-season after Denmark failed to qualify for the tournament, and forwards Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko will similarly benefit from an uninterrupted summer after Cameroon and Slovenia both missed out on a place in North America.
