Klopp set to become Germany manager after Nagelsmann's elimination
After Julian Nagelsmann's resignation following Germany's penalty shootout loss to Paraguay in the 2026 World Cup round of 16, the German Football Association is in final negotiations with Jürgen Klopp on a contract running until 2030.
Jürgen Klopp is on the verge of returning to the touchline, two years after leaving Liverpool. According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, the German Football Association (DFB) is in final negotiations with the 59-year-old manager to take charge of the national team, with a contract through 2030 including the next World Cup.
The sequence accelerated following Germany’s elimination by Paraguay in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. Held to a 0-0 draw at the end of regular time, Germany collapsed in the penalty shootout (4-3), prompting Julian Nagelsmann to resign immediately after.
According to Plettenberg, citing Sky Sport, “final negotiations are scheduled for Friday and Saturday in New York”. The question of Klopp’s separation from Red Bull, where he held the position of head of football since January 2025, would not be an obstacle: it “will be finalized once the complete agreement between him and the DFB has been concluded”, the journalist clarified on his X account.
If the deal goes through, Klopp will inherit a squad in shock from a premature exit at home — the 2026 World Cup is being held in the United States, Canada and Mexico — and will have to rebuild a group ahead of the next edition.
