Lyon sell Afonso Moreira to Bayer Leverkusen for €32 million
Signed from Sporting Portugal for €2 million, Portuguese winger Afonso Moreira joins Bayer Leverkusen for €32 million, according to Fabrizio Romano. A €30 million profit that comes at a crucial time for Lyon's finances.
Olympique Lyonnais have reached an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for the transfer of Afonso Moreira, according to Fabrizio Romano. The deal is worth a minimum of €32 million, and the player must undergo his medical with the German club this week.
The revelation of the season at Lyon, the 21-year-old Portuguese winger scored 8 goals and provided 11 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions. Statistics that clearly convinced the reigning German champions to invest in him to strengthen their squad.
The deal represents a €30 million profit for Lyon, who had only spent €2 million to sign Moreira from Sporting Portugal in summer 2025. An exceptional return that illustrates the Rhône club’s ability to unearth and develop attacking talent.
This influx of funds arrives at a strategic moment for Lyon, whose finances remain fragile despite a relaxation of measures imposed by the National Management Control Authority (DNCG) in December. The proceeds from this sale should provide additional room for maneuver for the club during the rest of the summer transfer window.
Lyon is establishing itself as the most active Ligue 1 club since the transfer market opened. On arrivals, Lyon have already confirmed the signings of Kaïl Boudache (free, OGC Nice), Mads Bidstrup (€10 million, RB Salzburg) and Julien Duranville (€5.5 million, Borussia Dortmund), for a total investment of approximately €15.5 million. Moreira’s departure, combined with these signings, shapes an ambitious and balanced summer transfer window for the Rhône club.
